While it is easy to fall into the trap of going with a generic custom message, i.e. Beth and Jason - December 25, 2008, it can pay off to be unique.

CUSTOM FORTUNE COOKIE TIP #4 - BE UNIQUE

It always amazes me the creativity of our customers. The other day I had a large company call wanting to get a quote on fortune cookies.  They were looking for over 200,000 cookies, a very large order, and they mentioned they were going to be running a campaign and they wanted to use fortune cookies to promote their product.  We have done similar order before, companies use fortune cookies all the time to promote a new items or product line, but for this company they were wanting to use the fortune as the actual coupon.  There would be numerous fortunes, i.e. “5% OFF”, “10% OFF, etc… but the neat thing was that they were going to use the backside of the message as the actual bar code.  What a great idea!  We ran some samples and to make sure the bar code would scan, and whammo success!! The campaign will be a huge success.

For wedding messages we had a couple that used the messages as a short story about themselves and it was up to the guests to put the fortunes together to arrange the story.  They did by table, so each guest at each table had their own cookie, on the front it said “Thank you for sharing this special day with us!” and on the back it had three lines of a story about how they met and future plans, but you had use all the fortunes on the table to put the story together.  I thought that it was a great idea!

Today I am going to change the blog up a bit.  In my 2 previous posts I have been quite lengthy describing why and how I got in the fortune cookies making business and a little bit about us. Now my daily blog is going to consist of one tip that you can use in not only choosing your custom message but its appearance.  As always I will also let you view a few of the order we received today and what messages were used.

USE A TEXT COLOR OTHER THAN BLACK FOR YOUR MESSAGE. If you are a corporation I can understand using plain old black, it gives the message a professional look and is easy to ready. Our company name “tankinz” comes from the names of my two kids Tanner and Kinsee, how’s that for creativity!

It is funny the directions life can take you.  My wife and I graduated from college and wondered what direction we would go with our careers. My wife graduated in accounting and myself in communications. From the start we both had the itch to do our own thing.  While keeping our day jobs (my wife worked at an accounting firm and my self selling television advertising) we dabbled a bit here with ebay here and there.  We sold baby bracelets and ink cartridges and made a few bucks along the way. 

Our first real big leap came when we purchased a small chinese restaurant and named it Little Hong Kong.  We hired a chef and my wife worked the front end along with a few part time waitresses. On weekends I would spend time helping our chef out.  Eventually I felt brave enough to take over the reigns in the kitchen.  Business went well, so well infact that it become a columists from the Salt Lake Tribunes favorite place to eat and she ended up writing a very nice article about our little place which ended up on the front page of the local section of the paper.  We got swamped and burned out at the same time. My wife and I decided that either we expand the size of the restaurant or sell it while business was good. We ended up selling the business and made out with a little cash.

We took a little time off on vacation, came back and got the itch again.  This time we purchased a 40 year old business that manufactured chow mein noodles, wonton skins, egg roll skins and fortune cookies for some of the local restaurants around town. This is how we started in the fortune cookie business.

It’s hard to believe but it’s true, my career profession (at least for now) is making fortune cookies.  Hardly what youngsters dream of when they grow up.  But to tell you the truth, for the past 3 years I have been doing this there hasn’t been one day that I didn’t look forward to going to work.

My niche with the fortune cookies has become selling custom fortune cookies on the web. Whether its for weddings, corporate events, baby showers, birthdays, etc…  people come to me to get the fortune cookies made with their special message placed inside. When you consider all the other announcemnts, tradeshow giveaways, etc.. fortune cookies are actually a great idea.  Give your guests or clients a treat and leave them with your info at the same time.

My url is www.tankinz.com and thre you can find all sorts of ideas and cookie packages to meet your needs.  It’s actually a pretty slick site and very user friendly. I developed the website and update it myself, it is a fun website, check it out.

The other reason for creating this blog was to give those who are in need of the cookies some ideas in creating thier custom messages.  Though my website (www.tankinz.com) has many custom fortune cookie message idea samples for weddings, baby shower, corporate, religous events, etc… this blog will allow my to give more info.  What I plan on doing is daily posting the orders I received during the day on this blog.  This should be a great benefit for those of you looking for message idea samples.  I will omit the personal info from each order, but include the messages, etc…
